Conservative Party leadership contest: Single-sex spaces

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Conservative Party leadership contest.

I understand the concerns many people have over the protection of single-sex spaces.  I am pleased the Government recognises the importance of protecting single-sex spaces, which is provided for in the Equality Act.

The Equality Act 2010 not only protects transgender people from discrimination, but also makes it clear that providers have the right to restrict use of spaces on the basis of sex, and exclude transgender people.  This position is unchanged since 2010 and I continue to believe it strikes the right balance in what is a complex and emotive area.

Regardless of who becomes Conservative Party leader, and therefore Prime Minister, I trust they will continue to protect women’s rights and freedoms.
