Sale and transportation of live crabs and lobsters

Thank you for contacting me about the sale and transportation of live crabs and lobsters.

Under the Welfare of Animals (Transport) (England) Order 2006, it is an offence to transport any cold-blooded invertebrate animal in a way which causes, or is likely to cause, injury or unnecessary suffering to that animal. It is also an offence to transport a cold-blooded invertebrate in a receptacle or means of transport under conditions (in particular with regard to space, ventilation, temperature and security) and with such supply of liquid and oxygen, as are inappropriate for the species concerned. Local authorities are responsible for the enforcement of animal welfare in transport regulations.

Further, I understand that the industry is currently in the process of developing further guidance to support the welfare needs of decapod crustaceans including their transport and handling. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is currently awaiting the outcome of this work.
