Thank you for contacting me about Turkey's actions in Iraq and Syria.
I can assure you that Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) Ministers and senior officials regularly reiterate to all parties the need for dialogue and cooperation between Turkey and Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, to combat terrorism, ensure regional security, and protect civilians. The UK's diplomatic missions are also in regular contact with Turkish and Iraqi authorities over these issues and continue to urge restraint.
It is therefore encouraging that discussions have taken place between Iraqi and Turkish Defence Ministers regarding Ankara's ongoing military operations against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a proscribed terrorist group, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. HM Government is following the situation closely, including monitoring Turkey's Operation Claw Lock.
As part of regular contact with the Turkish Government, Ministers and officials also frequently discuss the situation in Syria. Indeed, I know that HM Government welcomes that the ceasefire in Idlib, agreed in March 2020, has broadly held. Going forward, HM Government will continue to urge all parties to increase their efforts to adhere to agreed ceasefires and their obligations under international law, and allow humanitarian access.
More broadly, the UK recognises Turkey’s generosity in hosting over four million refugees from Syria, Iraq and elsewhere, and is committed to engage closely with international partners to support efforts to manage irregular migration effectively.
