Assisted Dying

Thank you for contacting me about assisted dying.

It has long been my view that Parliament should bring forward a vote on this matter and that we should legalise assisted dying. I look forward to bringing this opinion forward in a Westminster Hall debate on the matter on Monday 29th April at 4.30 pm.

I have seen first hand the consequences of someone living with a terminal illness and the suffering they must endure before dying. Therefore, if we can introduce measures within Parliament that allow for a safe and secure way in which those with a terminal illness can choose their own end-of-life pathway then we should indeed accept it.

While some in Parliament oppose this position and seek to deny a free vote, I cannot be clearer that about where I stand on this issue and that as long as I am your representative, I will hold this position. I should also add that looking at the experience of other countries who have introduced this legislation we can learn a great deal to ensure that assisted dying is neither exploited nor taken advantage of.

I look forward to contributing to the debate.
