2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the RNLI.
It was a pleasure to lead a Westminster Hall debate this morning to recognise the organisation's history, praise its work and celebrate its volunteers.
MPs from across the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland joined me in telling tales of epic heroism, where volunteers have put their lives on the line to save those in danger on the sea.
Locally, we are very lucky to have three fantastic lifeboat stations in South Devon as well as four beaches patrolled by RNLI lifeguards. These three lifeboat stations are a necessity to coastal living, as are our beach lifeguards, with well over 100 volunteers battling against ferocious storms and dealing with the thousands of visitors who flock to our beaches each year.
The RNLI's progress and commitment to helping those in need have made it a well-loved institution which carries the support and confidence of the British public, and I hope it continues for another 200 years at least.
