Yesterday’s debate on the fishing industry allowed Members of Parliament to come together and discuss the challenges and opportunities for the fishing industry.
It was a privilege to be able to stand up for local businesses across South Devon and raise concerns around the status of Pacific oysters, the effect of poor water quality on the aquaculture sector, EU trade flows, fishermen’s medical certificates and the catch app.
Brixham is a fantastic example of a successful fishing port, having had record sales since 2021 and on course to sell £63 million this year, and should be used as a model for other fish markets.
We need to talk a lot more about food security in this country, and we need to talk about how we can be more self-sustainable. Our coastal waters offer that opportunity. We must make sure that, when we come back with the three-yearly reports on food security, fishing and aquaculture are fully embedded to help us get better local food on our plates.
