I am very well aware of the issues many residents of South Devon are facing when trying to access an NHS dentist.
I was therefore pleased to be able to speak in a debate this afternoon on the subject, having spoken to many local residents, dental professionals and representatives of the Peninsula Dental School.
It is essential that as well as reforming the NHS dental contract that dates back to 2006 and addressing the geographical disparity of the UDA system, we also find short-term solutions to help those who are in pain. I put forward suggestions including dental access centres and mobile units, financed by the underspend in Devon that has been ringfenced for dental services. There is also an opportunity for dental therapists to play a greater role and to support the work of dentists.
While the Secretary of State highlighted the progress that has already been made, there is still more to do, and I will continue to work with colleagues and NHS Devon to ensure adequate NHS dental services are available in South Devon.
