Yesterday I spoke in support of Riverford's five principles to support small fruit and vegetable growers and farms.
Over the last four years, I have spoken regularly and worked hard to try and make it easier for small farmers. Using the Procurement Act and Agriculture Act, we can change the way in which we help small businesses get into the public procurement supply chain as well as lead by example to supermarkets.
But ultimately, Government needs also to ensure that supermarkets honour their contracts and agreements with farmers. This means not changing agreements at the last moment, paying on time, working for the long term and paying a fair price.
Our farmers in South Devon and across the country are of vital importance.
