Yesterday, Anthony took part in a Westminster Hall debate on Affordable Housing and Planning Reform.
Housing is an issue that many of us across the south-west feel extraordinarily passionate about, with many local people currently experiencing difficulties in finding affordable housing to rent or buy. This is perpetuated by the proliferation of second homes and Airbnbs in South Devon, with second homes accounting for up to 95% of properties in some areas.
Anthony spoke of the need to find a better formula to calculate “affordable”, to ensure that second homeowners pay their fair share, to look at regulation and taxation of Airbnbs, and to incorporate measures from the recently debated Planning (Enforcement) Bill in the Planning Reform Bill.
If we want to provide a better long term rental market for residents and help people get onto the housing ladder, then we have to introduce reforms that will improve the system.
