Anthony took part in a Westminster Hall debate on the diagnosis of liver disease and liver cancer.
The incidence of liver disease is increasing dramatically, and although 90% of liver disease is preventable, symptoms often don't present until there is irreversible liver damage. Around 10,000 people die from liver disease and liver cancer each year in the UK, the second leading cause of premature mortality in England and Wales.
The Southwest is at a geographical disadvantage when it comes to liver care services, so I am supportive of University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust's proposal to establish a new liver transplant centre.
I asked Dr Caroline Johnson, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, for an update on the review of adult liver disease services which is due to take place this year. She reassured me that the review will be taking place and there should be a report after that, and also confirmed that the Minister responsible for transplant care will write to me with further details about what is being done in this area.
